CAPE TOWN FAN WALK SET TO RE-OPEN

by on in General News

When South Africa was first chosen to host the world cup, legions of people bemoaned the money which would need to be spent to prepare for the tournament, especially on the construction of the stadiums.  Many people still believe that the stadiums built around the country for the 2010 World Cup will all become white elephants, and in Cape Town most people also expected the much-hyped Fan Walk to become a distant memory.

However, this scenic strip from the city centre to the stadium has been named one of the Cape Town’s top hotspots and is set to be re-opened for the city’s first big post-World Cup test of the stadium on August 27 with a PSL double-header.
All the World Cup fanfare and food stalls will be incorporated again as well as the same transport system which was implemented during the World Cup.

Initially, the popular route was to have been closed after the World Cup, but authorities have pushed for the walk to remain open and to be used as a tourism draw card, and city officials have proposed that the Fan Walk should become a “permanent fixture” before and after all events at the Cape Town Stadium.

Grant Pascoe, the city’s mayco member for social development, has even gone so far as to suggest that the route be turned into a pedestrian zone every Sunday for the rest of the year.

In the meantime, locals can look forward to getting into the ‘gees’ again, albeit on a smaller scale.
The opening PSL match will be between Vasco da Gama and Orlando Pirates and kick-off is scheduled for 6pm. Ajax Cape Town will then take on Bloemfontein Celtic at 8.45pm.
