Sun is Shining and the Weather is Sweet

by on in Blog

As a child I remember religiously taking a “Sunday drive” with my dad in his old Mercedes. Each time ending up at Chapman’s Peak Hotel in Hout Bay.  Dad on the steps smoking his pipe; me lazily swinging my legs on the edge of the balcony while savouring an ice cream as it streamed between my fingers as the summer temperatures began to soar.  Complete heaven!  Now that I am a luxury Cape Town lass I can revisit this dad ‘n daughter memory and not necessarily end up a sticky mess.

This historical hotel, dating from the late 19th century is comfortably positioned with the ocean in their front garden and their back garden tucked into the shadow of world famous Chapman’s Peak. Its’ ideal location 20 minutes (traffic permitting) from Cape Town City Centre and the Waterfront is the ultimate escape in my book. The Nobrega family lovingly renovated the hotel in 2009 adding a new wing with 22 new contemporary rooms and two stunning penthouse suites; elegant and indulgent.

There is nothing like escaping the city on a Friday afternoon and checking into this retreat for the weekend. I would recommend you head for the terrace and mingle with chilled Hout Bay residents and tourists alike as everyone settles into the pace of luxurious lazy days ahead. Alternatively, grab your cossie and head for the rooftop pool exclusive to hotel residents.  This in my opinion is THE ultimate Peninsula pool.

The views are spectacular. Have your camera handy and keep an eye out for the fishing boats returning to the harbour as you sip your Mojito, wiggle your toes at the seagulls and spot the social scene from up high.  Once you’ve watched a spectacular sunset take your seat at the al-fresco terrace and order delicious calamari voted “one of the top 20 things to do in Cape Town”.

As the night takes shape move to the cigar lounge and order a heated Portuguese brandy, put your feet up and savour this magical escape right in the heart of the Cape.
